Victoria’s Got a Book Tour
It was bound to happen. Just like Dr. Phil’s wife, Robin, Victoria Osteen (wife of Joel) has a new book. It’s called Love Your Life and it’s published by Simon & Schuster. She appeared on Good Morning America this morning and is slated to appear on Fox News and CNN, among others.
Any bets on if it becomes a bestseller? I give it about a week to hit the Top 5.
I say this not because the book is good or bad — I don’t know, I haven’t read it and don’t intend to — but rather because the publication of this work is emblematic of the problems in the publishing industry. If you don’t have a platform and a following of thousands — no hundreds of thousands, it’s almost impossible to get a book contract. Publishing has become almost exclusively about numbers and it’s choking our public debate. (I know that’s a little off track for this blog, but it’s a legitimate criticism none the less.)
For those looking to get a peak into the book (and more!), they can visit Victoria’s web site — Victoria Osteen.com, designed in soft pinks and other pastel tones befitting a site for its target audience women. This is in stark contrast to her husband’s site which is dominated by a manly dark blue.
I must note here that Robin McGraw’s book tanked. I don’t expect, however, the same to happen with Mrs. Osteen’s book. First she has a mainstream publisher and Robin’s book was published by Thomas Nelson, a Christian publisher. Second, Mrs. Osteen is seen and heard from weekly while Robin is a once-in-a-while participant in her husband’s work. I wanted to clear about a fact mentioned above about Robin McGraw’s first book, Inside My Heart. I would not say it “tanked.” And here is why:
When the hardcover released, it debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List at #1 for Hardcover Advice, How-To, Misc. (October 8, 2006) and remained in the top 20 in November, December and January. It also hit the USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly bestsellers lists. To date the book (hardcover, paperback, and international versions) has sold over 1 million copies.

I stand corrected.
However, we know that it is possible to buy one’s way onto the NY Times best seller’s list particularly by deeply discounting the book to large groups. Was that done with Mrs. McGraw’s book?
Also, given the promotional push available to Mrs. McGraw (I was at the CBA where it was promoted) and the number of copies sold, one would expect that book to have became part of the national conversation. It did not.
Therefore, while “tanked” was too strong a word (and do please excuse me), I think you would agree that the book was not a huge success outside a limited target audience.
