Rewriting the Bible on Rachel Maddow

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Thought this piece from Rachel Maddow might be of interest. It is about how Conservatives are re-writing the Bible. We assume that’s because they are trying to improve the product for the target audience. Enoy!

Here’s the Scientology commercial I wrote about last week.

God is Back

god-is-back-ft.jpg
There was a book review last week in the Financial Times for a book called God is Back. It is written by John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, who have written several other books together.

god-is-back.jpg

While I have not yet read the book, the basic premise does not appear to be new at all though the review makes it appear that way. The authors are economists and they look at religion through that lens suggesting that the way Americans practice their faith — with church and state as separate entities — is what allows it to thrive. I and many others before me have said the same thing. What is new is that the authors suggest that around the world, religion is growing based on this model rather than the European one where secularism has marginalized faith.

There is also a Fox News site has a good review of the book.

Joel Osteen Web Cast Tonight at 7 CT

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Excuse me for not posting of late, but I’ve been busy working on the new book. I have lots to catch up on and will do so over the next week or so. In the meantime, I wanted to alert you to Joel Osteen’s web cast, which is happening in just a few hours.

banner-03.jpg

Joel and Victoria will also be on Larry King tonight (Rick Warren was on last night which I’m sure you can find on the CNN web site).

Makes a lot of sense since hard times are leading folks to turn to faith, at least according to Pew. More on that soon.

In case you missed me on Marketplace

I did a short spot on public radio’s Marketplace on Tuesday. It was a story about the Franciscan’s using subway advertising to find friars-to-be.

An e-mail from Rick Warren

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Thought some of you might be interested in the email that Rick Warren sent out today to his list of pastors and friends. What I thought might be of particular interest his is live telecast on Wednesday, after the inauguration. The link is in the text.

You are one of the many pastors and friends I’ve known, served, or partnered with over the past 35 years. It has been my humble privilege.

I bleed for pastors, and I pray for pastors all the time. I understand the frustrations, share your hurt, and rejoice in your victories whenever you write.

Praying for other co-laborers in ministry is far more important than many of the things I do, because your ministry of pastoring - the calling to care for a local Body of Christ - is the greatest responsibility one can be given on earth. If you understand what life, the Cross, the Church, and the future are all about, you know that nothing else compares in significance. Period.

Today, our culture idolizes entertainment, sports, business success, political power, and prosperity. While these have their place, Jesus did not die for any of these things. He died for the people that you care for, feed, and lead.

Nothing matters more than the Church. We forget that the reason God created the entire universe is because he wanted a family, and that family is the only thing that will last forever with Him. Everything else on this planet is temporary, no matter how much attention it gets.

The upcoming U.S. presidential inauguration on Tuesday has received so much attention, and regardless of how each of us voted, we all can celebrate the historic installation of our first African-American President. To live in a free nation of unlimited possibility where the son of an African immigrant can rise to the highest level of leadership is a privilege we must never take for granted.

But, in God’s eyes, and in the perspective of his eternal purposes, what you are doing will actually last longer than what any political leader will do. Your ministry will impact eternity. Think about that! While no nation lasts forever, God’s family will. Remember, prominence and significance are not synonymous.

Why am I writing? To urge you to keep on, no matter what you’re facing right now. 30 years ago this week, as a 25 year old, I started Saddleback with a public commitment to stay 40 years. It’s never been without it’s challenges, but God-willing, I’ll fulfill my commitment to pastor this local congregation that I love so much.

Please pray that I’ll bring glory to God and represent all pastors well on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, we’ll share our next Pastor’s Connection Webcast from our nation’s capitol. I hope you can join us for more encouragement. I’ll have a lot to share! Join us live at 2:00pm (EST) for the conversation. If you can’t join me live, we’ll post the video here.

Never give up! Love God, and everyone else! Fear nothing on earth. Overcome evil with good!

Marketing church like Starbucks?

Monday, December 1st, 2008

The following video called, What if Starbucks marketed like the church?, was brought to my attention via Andrew Sullivan’s Daily Dish.

The video covers many of the topics that we discuss here, but in an amusing way (though I would have appreciated it being a little shorter).

The videographer is Richard Reisling, author of Church Marketing 101 and blogger at beyondrelevance.com. He also has a web site richardreisling.com.

Unlike me, Richard is an honest-to-God church consultant. Much of what he criticizes about church marketing (at least what I can gather from the video) seems to be in line with what Rick Warren has been warning churches about for decades. Notable examples include the first-time attender (the woman) who can’t find the bathroom or the parking spot saved for “coffee drinker higher uppers.” Warren has always advocated leaving the close up spaces for newbies and, taking a page from McDonald’s, making sure that the bathrooms are clean. (This, of course, assumes that you’ve made them readily accessible or you wouldn’t care what they look like.)

The video’s amusing and fairly informative for the uninitiated. I’m curious if there’s anything beyond the “Purpose-Driven Church” that Reisling advocates. I’ve asked him to check out this blog. I hope he does.

Sorry for the P**n on Google Reader

I’m so sorry this happened again. I think I know what the problem is now and I’m hopeful it won’t happen again. Again, my apologies.

Victoria’s Got a Book Tour

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

It was bound to happen. Just like Dr. Phil’s wife, Robin, Victoria Osteen (wife of Joel) has a new book. It’s called Love Your Life and it’s published by Simon & Schuster. She appeared on Good Morning America this morning and is slated to appear on Fox News and CNN, among others.

Any bets on if it becomes a bestseller? I give it about a week to hit the Top 5.

I say this not because the book is good or bad — I don’t know, I haven’t read it and don’t intend to — but rather because the publication of this work is emblematic of the problems in the publishing industry. If you don’t have a platform and a following of thousands — no hundreds of thousands, it’s almost impossible to get a book contract. Publishing has become almost exclusively about numbers and it’s choking our public debate. (I know that’s a little off track for this blog, but it’s a legitimate criticism none the less.)

For those looking to get a peak into the book (and more!), they can visit Victoria’s web site — Victoria Osteen.com, designed in soft pinks and other pastel tones befitting a site for its target audience women. This is in stark contrast to her husband’s site which is dominated by a manly dark blue.

I must note here that Robin McGraw’s book tanked. I don’t expect, however, the same to happen with Mrs. Osteen’s book. First she has a mainstream publisher and Robin’s book was published by Thomas Nelson, a Christian publisher. Second, Mrs. Osteen is seen and heard from weekly while Robin is a once-in-a-while participant in her husband’s work. Finally, there are a lot of people out there who obviously want to hear what Victoria Osteen has to say. I know. They all attacked me the last time I wrote about her.fosamax leg cramp

Christian Twitter

Monday, October 6th, 2008

I don’t get Twitter. Well, I do but overall unless you work in PR I don’t see that this technology has somehow improved our way of living. I’ve been at a number of new media events lately and people who are presenting keep asking, “Is anybody twittering this event?” and all I can think is “aren’t you interesting enough for me to just be listening to you?”

Well, just like GodTube was spawned from YouTube, now gospelr is twitter for Christians.

gosplr-logo.png

Just like regular Twitter, there are people just writing about their day. This is interspersed with Bible quotes and people talking about their testimony. According to TechCrunch, the site is supposed to be for those who believe and those who don’t — yet.

As the reporter on the Tech Crunch article notes, the best thing about the site — the RSS feed!
